Description
Completed in the 14th century during the reign of King Ferdinand, the Fernandine Wall once surrounded and protected the city of Porto. With the urban expansion of the 19th century and the loss of its military significance, much of the structure was demolished, leaving only a few monumental sections today. Alongside one of these stretches stands the Guindais Funicular; originally inaugurated in 1891, it was restored after more than a century of inactivity to become a prime tourist route. Today, this lift connects two of the city's most iconic areas: Ribeira and Batalha.
