Description

Founded in the 16th century by the Order of Saint Augustine, the Monastery of Serra do Pilar is renowned for its circular church and cloister, which are unique in Portugal. Currently under the jurisdiction of the Portuguese Army, the site serves military purposes. In 1996, the monastery was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site and is today one of the most stunning viewpoints over the Douro River and the city of Porto.
